The Grand Army Republic
The Grand Army Republic was founded in 1866. It started out as an organization for honorably discharged Union Veterans. The Group was originally founded to help soldier's integrate back into society, find jobs and housing,as well as getting their pensions. The G.A.R. fought hard for the rights of Black Soldier's pensions as well, but this was a fight they didn't win.
In time the organization would grow into a power house that would become part of businesses, military reserve groups as well as politics. The Group backed 5 U.S. Presidents including Grant and McKinley. In 1868 they started a campaign to make May 30th Decoration Day to honor our veterans. Each area of the country began their own remembrance but it would not become the current Federal, Memorial Day Holiday until 1971.
There is no official reason why they started the Soldier's Circles or why the graves are placed in a circle. Unofficial groups have said that the bond between soldiers is strong and unbreakable like a circle and that each man is equal in death.
The Soldier's Circle in the Shamokin Cemetery was designed in 1870 and was officially designated by Alexander Caldwell in 1871. The monument in the center houses a stone brought from the battlefield at Gettysburg. Today there are almost 200 soldiers in the circle.
